The products on this shelf contain live microorganisms, usually lactic acid bacteria of the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, in combinations of two to thirty strains.
CFU IS THE FIGURE ON THE FRONT. It stands for colony-forming units and states how many live cells a serving contains, typically between 1 and 100 billion. The figure applies at manufacture unless stated otherwise — several ranges instead give the count at the best-before date, which is the more honest measure.
STRAINS ARE NAMED IN FULL. Complete labelling looks like "Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG" — genus, species and strain. If only the genus is given, the information is incomplete.
STORAGE. Some ranges require refrigeration, others are shelf-stable. It is stated on the pack and worth reading before buying.
