These products contain enzymes that break down different components of food: protease for protein, amylase for starch, lipase for fat, lactase for milk sugar and cellulase for plant fibre. ACTIVITY IS NOT MEASURED IN MILLIGRAMS. Enzymes are given in activity units — HUT, DU, FIP, ALU and similar — and these are not interchangeable. Two products with the same milligram figure can differ widely in activity. The units are in the nutrition table. BROAD OR NARROW BLENDS. Some formulas contain four enzymes, others fifteen. More is not automatically better; it depends on what the blend is intended for, which the product text states. PLANT OR ANIMAL ORIGIN. Enzymes from fungi and bacteria are the most common in the plant-based ranges; pancreatin comes from animals. The ingredient list states which. DOSAGE is stated on the pack and should be followed.
