Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is sold in two basic forms, and the ingredient list tells you which.
STANDARDISED EXTRACT states the withanolide content, usually 1.5 to 5 per cent. That is the figure that makes two products comparable, and it is on the pack.
WHOLE-HERB POWDER is the dried root milled, with no stated content. Cheaper per gram, but the withanolide amount is unknown.
NAMED EXTRACTS. Some ranges use extracts under their own trade names and state them on the pack. They cost more and carry a fixed standardisation.
ROOT OR LEAF. Root extract is the most common. Some products also contain leaf, which is in the ingredient list.
DOSAGE AND WARNINGS are on the pack and should be followed. Not intended for use during pregnancy.
AVAILABILITY. This shelf is not shown in every market.
THE BRANDS. Osavi carries the organic ones, Swanson and NOW Foods the standardised extracts, OstroVit the best value.
