Whey protein

177 products

Whey comes in three forms: concentrate, isolate and hydrolysate. The difference lies in how much milk sugar and fat has been filtered out — and therefore in the price per kilo of protein. This shelf holds 177 products from Allnutrition, Nutrend, Applied Nutrition and some twenty other brands.

Whey is separated from milk during cheesemaking and sold as a powder in three degrees of filtration. CONCENTRATE is the least processed at around 70–80 per cent protein, the remainder milk sugar and fat. It is the cheapest per kilo and what most people buy. ISOLATE is filtered one step further, sits at 85–90 per cent and carries very little lactose. It costs more per kilo, but more of that weight is protein. HYDROLYSATE is partly broken down already in the tub. It is the most expensive and noticeably more bitter. HOW TO CHOOSE. Compare the price per kilo of protein rather than per tub — a four-kilo bag of concentrate and a two-kilo tub of isolate are rarely the same deal the label suggests. If you prefer to avoid lactose, isolate is the sensible choice. Unsure about a flavour? Most ranges come in 400–900 grams before the large sacks. THE BRANDS. Allnutrition and Nutrend carry the widest flavour selection, Applied Nutrition and Rule One the largest pack sizes, and Dorian Yates a narrower range.
