Plant protein is made from legumes, seeds and grains rather than milk. Protein content typically sits at 70–85 per cent depending on the source and the refining. THE SOURCES. Pea protein is the most common and the cheapest. Rice protein is milder. Hemp is darker and coarser. Soya has the highest protein content of the four but is also the one most often avoided. Blends combine two or three for a more even amino acid profile. TASTE AND TEXTURE. Plant protein is grainier than whey and tastes more of its source. Chocolate flavours hide that best; unflavoured versions are the most honest and are mostly used for cooking and baking. HOW TO CHOOSE. Start with a smaller pack — the difference in taste between pea and rice is larger than between two tubs of whey. Read the ingredient list if you want to avoid soya. THE BRANDS. Osavi has the widest organic range, Allnutrition and NOW Foods the largest pack sizes.
